Part II: SHAPE

Shape represents the outline of a diamond. There are 7 basic shapes, and except for the step-cut emerald cut, all are variations of the round brilliant, with facets radiating from a central point. Fancy shape diamonds, as these shapes are called, can be beautiful and interesting as an expression of individuality.

Ideal proportions are not defined for fancy shapes, but generally the closer that the percentages get to a round brilliants ideal, the more brilliant the fancy shape should be. The difference in brilliance of the fancy shape versus round must be weighed against the uniqueness and elegance of another shape. There can be a difference in price for a fancy shape, depending on supply and demand, and cutting efficiency. These differences might range from 10-15% more or less than a round. idazzle.com Facts:

  • The word diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable, and indeed diamonds defied the efforts of cutting or many years. Finally, it was discovered that diamonds cut diamonds, and primitive cutting techniques gave way over the centuries to the modern round brilliant cut.
