It is important for you to know the quality of a diamond so that you know how rare it is. This rarity is what you pay for. The diamond's quality grade alone does not tell you if it is beautiful. Beauty is a complex combination of all diamond factors, resulting in an intangible element of personality.
We strongly urge you to buy a diamond that comes with an independent lab grading report. There are several laboratories that will evaluate a diamond according to the factors that make it unique, and provide paperwork, called a certificate, to identify it. These firms do not buy or sell diamonds, nor do they assign a value, so they can provide an unbiased opinion of a diamond’s quality factors. The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, created the diamond grading standards, and provides lab grading services. There are several companies that also provide grading reports: European Gem Labs, or EGL; International Gem Institute, or IGI; the American Gem Society, or AGS; and HRD. A grading report or an appraisal from the Jeweler, while important for value purposes, is not the same thing as an independent report.
