idazzle.com Facts:
The word diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable, and indeed diamonds defied the efforts of cutting or many years. Finally, it was discovered that diamonds cut diamonds, and primitive cutting techniques gave way over the centuries to the modern round brilliant cut.

Researching Cut: Shape
The shape, or outline of the diamond, is one of the first decisions you will need to make. There are seven basic shapes, but the round is by far the most popular. They are the most standardized and optically the most brilliant. Fancy shape diamonds, as the other shapes are called, can be beautiful and interesting as an expression of individuality.
Fancy shapes vary greatly in their cutting, and ideal proportions are not defined. The difference in brilliance of the fancy shape versus round must be weighed against the uniqueness and elegance of the different outline. You may find that an elongated shape looks best on your finger (or your fiancé's finger), and in larger sizes, fancy shapes are sometimes more desired. There can be differences in price for fancy shapes, depending on supply and demand, and cutting efficiency. These differences might range from 10-15% more or less than a round.
