idazzle.com Facts:

  • By the time a diamond makes it to the Jeweler's showcase, it has made an incredible journey through time and geography. From formation approximately 100 miles beneath the earth's crust, to being thrust up through a volcanic eruption where it waited over 45 million years to be mined, it is truly a miracle that a diamond makes it to the finished stage at all!
  • Researching Diamond Quality

It is important for you to know the quality of a diamond so that you know how rare it is. This rarity is what you pay for. The quality grade alone does not tell you whether a diamond is beautiful. Beauty is a complex combination of all diamond factors, and the result is a total package that appeals to the individual.

    The Importance of Certificates

We strongly urge you to buy a diamond that comes with an independent lab grading report. There are several laboratories that will evaluate a diamond according to the factors that make it unique, and provide paperwork called a certificate, to identify it. These firms do not buy or sell diamonds, nor do they assign a value, so they can provide an unbiased opinion of a diamond’s quality factors. The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, created the diamond grading standards and provides excellent lab grading services. There are several companies that also provide grading reports: European Gem Labs, or EGL; International Gem Institute, or IGI; the American Gem Society, or AGS; and HRD. A grading report or an appraisal from the Jeweler, while important for value and insurance purposes, is not the same thing as an independent report.

There are 4 basic factors that help determine the relative rarity of a diamond (we have separated Cut into Shape and Proportions). So to find out how to make a brilliant diamond decision, select one of the quality factors below, or the "next page" arrow to continue!

Research Cut: Proportions  CUT: PROPORTIONS refers to the way a diamond reflects light.
